What Social Media Websites Are Used The Most?
• Jan 13
It might be a mistake to completely disregard Myspace when promoting a musical artist. According to an article on hypebot.com there is a surprising amount of activity on both the declining Myspace and the growing Pinterest. Our goal as social marketers must be to figure out what platforms our target demographic is visiting, and take each of those platforms seriously.
According to the ComScore Social Media Statistics (pictured above), Facebook not surprisingly leads with 166,007,000 unique visitors. Despite having the largest base and the longest use time, Facebook might be too cramped to effectively spread your message. Another website with a more specific community might allow you to create a stronger fan base with less competition.
Which social media website you should start out with should be based upon your product. A Myspace community may have little value for a simple consumer product like soap, but it could be a gateway to new fans for a musical artist. When MySpace began to decline, it put the majority of its focus on music. The ComScore report shows that Myspace this re-defined focus must be working at least somewhat, since the site unexpectedly maintained more use than current social media darlings Tumblr and Google+. It's widely believed that Myspace is on the decline and Google+ is on the rise, so we wouldn't suggest you spend your entire budget on Myspace; however, based on the numbers reported in by ComScore, all of the social outlets have substantial followings and none should be ignored.
To give a more specific example, Pinterest and Tumblr can be unique marketing tools for luxury items and art/design products. For instance, Mazda can upload a photo of the Mazda Taiki and 11 people can pin it. They’ve not only been exposed to the product but also expressed that they find the product “cool” and “interesting.” Others will see and likewise pin the picture if they like it.
Of course, Facebook and Twitter are the obvious choices for beginning an online presence; but other outlets can and should be used in conjunction with the more mainstream social media sites when it helps to reach your target demographic.
